Tara River rafting is a must-do activity for adventure seekers visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Tara River, also known as the “Tear of Europe,” is one of the most beautiful and pristine rivers in Europe and offers some of the best rafting opportunities in the region. The river cuts through the Durmitor National Park, creating a stunning landscape of deep canyons, lush forests, and towering cliffs.

The Tara River is home to some of the most challenging rapids in Europe, making it a popular destination for experienced rafters. The rapids are graded on an international scale and range from Class II to Class V, offering a range of difficulty levels for rafters of all skill levels. The most challenging rapids can be found in the Canyon of Tara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is considered one of the most beautiful canyons in the world. Rafters can also enjoy calmer sections of the river, which offer a chance to take in the natural beauty and spot wildlife.

Best questions we’ve received about Tara rafting, the #1 outdoor activity in the region

You might find some of these questions weird, some funny, and others purely logical. The only thing that we are a bit sad about here in the canyon is that, even though we provide all the anwers in the tour descriptions and FAQ pages, most of the guests still do not read them. Why? “It’s easier to ask on the call or in the email directly.” We have got used to it, but again, for those who do read and appreaciate our time or just want to stay informed, we have compiled a list of the most popular questions regarding whitewater Tara rafting.

So, let’s start.

1. Is Tara rafting fun?

Rafting on the Tara river can be a fun and exciting activity for people who enjoy outdoor adventures and the thrill of navigating through rapids. It’s a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced rafters.

Some people find the rush of navigating through rapids and the feeling of working as a team with other rafters to be exhilarating and fun. Others enjoy the scenic views and peacefulness of gliding through calm stretches of water. It’s a great way to connect with nature, get some exercise and have a memorable time with friends and family.

2. What do we do if it rains?

In general, most rafting companies will NOT operate trips if the weather conditions are too dangerous or if the water levels are too high. Heavy rain can cause the river to become more turbulent and the rapids more challenging, which can make the experience less safe for rafters. However, this does not mean that you should cancel your trip to Tara canyon because the weather there changes rapidly. You can always push the rafting tour to a next day and stay inside the camp and party with friends and family. Bad weather does not mean bad holiday.

3. Is Tara rafting dangerous?

Rafting in general can be considered an adventure sport and thus it can carry some level of risk. However, if you are properly trained, equipped and guided by a professional, the risk of accidents or injuries can be greatly reduced.

Water levels are higher during May, so all the adrenaline junkies will book a tour in that period, familes and people seeking to enjoy the view and just chill will usually visit us in July or August, you can bring a four year old to a boat in that period.

Before going on a rafting trip, it’s recommended that you are informed about your own health condition, if you have any medical problems that could affect your ability to participate in the activity.

In general, Tara River rafting can be considered a safe activity if you follow the safety guidelines and instructions provided by the outfitter, and if you are properly equipped and trained. It’s always important to check the company’s safety records and the qualifications of the guides before booking a trip, and to follow their instructions throughout the trip.

4. White water rafting without a guide is possible?

Going rafting without a professional guide can be dangerous for a number of reasons. Firstly, professional guides are trained and experienced in navigating the river and handling emergency situations. They have extensive knowledge of the river, including the location of hazards, the best routes to take, and how to respond to changing conditions. They are also equipped with the necessary safety gear and rescue equipment. Without a guide, you may not be aware of potential dangers, such as hidden rocks or currents, and may not know how to respond if something goes wrong.

Secondly, professional guides have experience in assessing the skill level of their clients and providing appropriate instruction. They can provide tips and techniques to help you navigate the rapids safely. Without a guide, you may not have the necessary skills to navigate the river safely, especially if you are new to rafting or if the rapids are more challenging.

Our advice – NEVER, EVER, EVER go to rafting with your own equipment, without a guide, especially if it is your first time on Tara river.

5. Is Tara rafting activity possible in the winter?

Unfortunately, we do not offer rafting tours during the winter months. The colder temperatures and the potential for ice and snow on the river make it too dangerous and uncomfortable for a safe and enjoyable experience. We typically operate rafting tours during the summer months when the weather is warmer and the water levels are more suitable for rafting.

6. Can I go rafting If I can’t swim?

The ability to swim is not a requirement for our rafting tours, we have equipment and professional guides to ensure the safety of our guests. However, we highly recommend that you feel comfortable in the water and have a basic level of physical fitness. During the months of July and August, the water levels are typically lower, which makes it a great time for those who may not be strong swimmers. Our guides are trained professionals who will provide instruction and guidance throughout the trip and we have safety protocol in place to ensure that our guests have a safe and enjoyable experience. We understand that some guests may have concerns about their swimming abilities and we want to reassure you that our team will be there to assist you every step of the way. In that period we even have four and five year olds on the boats. Relax. Don’t let the group down.

7. Tara rafting in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Tara rafting in Montenegro is the same thing?

Same river, different starting points, different lenghts, both sides have professionals that will take care of you, same food (MNE will say theirs is better, we love them so we won’t argue). What is the difference then? The difference is in where you have headed or returning from, and that is not even a difference. Travelling to Montenegro coastline, perhaps Kotor, Budva, Herceg Novi or even towards Albania? You can stay on the Bosnian side or Montenegro side, proceed via Scepan polje border crossing towards your end goal. It’s just a personal preference. But stay on the Bosnian side, we have better jokes.

BONUS: Should you tip the skipper / guide and how much?

We strive to provide our guests with the best possible experience and our guides are a big part of that. They are the ones who ensure your safety and make the trip an unforgettable experience. It’s a tradition among our guests to show appreciation to their guides by tipping them after the tour. This is not mandatory but it is a nice gesture that is much appreciated by the guides. It is a way to say thank you for their hard work and dedication to making sure you have a great time on the river. You can tip them after the tour or later at the camp or restaurant. It’s completely up to you, but it’s a way to show your appreciation for the hard work and dedication of your guides. It means a lot to them and it’s a way to show that you enjoyed the tour and the service provided by our guides.
